For years, I lived with a quiet but persistent fear: the belief that I simply wasn’t enough. When an opportunity arose to become the director of a B1G university student union, I hesitated. Who was I to step into such a significant leadership role? I doubted my knowledge, my skills, and even my strength to take on the challenge. The voice inside me whispered, “You don’t belong here. You don’t have what it takes.”
But something inside me pushed back. I realized that fear was not just a roadblock—it was an invitation to grow. I made a conscious choice to face my doubts head-on. Through deep reflection, ongoing internal work with a coach and therapist, and relentless perseverance, I stepped into the role anyway. And you know what? I not only survived—I thrived. I discovered strengths I never knew I had, and I’ve blossomed as a campus leader.
Embracing the Journey
Of course, the journey isn’t over. There’s always more to learn, and that’s the beauty of it. Every day brings new challenges and opportunities to stretch myself further. Instead of fearing the unknown, I now embrace it as a chance to grow and evolve. I’ve learned that facing fear head-on is the most powerful way to demonstrate to yourself that you have what it takes to be, do, and have anything your heart desires.
Understanding Fear
Fear is a natural part of being human. It’s designed to keep us safe, but often, it holds us back from the very things we want most. It's a primal response to dangers that once lurked around every corner, like saber-toothed tigers! I refer to it as our "lizard brain," which reacts out of instinct that isn't necessary in today's modern world. The key is recognizing when fear is protecting you and when it’s hindering your growth.
The Power of Mindfulness
By practicing mindfulness and self-awareness, you can learn to manage your fears and use them as fuel for growth. Mindfulness helps you become aware of your thoughts and emotions. It allows you to create space between your feelings and reactions, giving you the power to choose how to respond.
Your Values, Your Life
One of the most powerful tools I’ve found for navigating change is a personal values inventory. Identifying what truly matters to you creates a compass that guides your decisions. When your actions align with your values, you pave the way for a fulfilling life. It's beneficial to periodically review your values inventory because life evolves, we evolve, and so do our values.
